WHERE ARE WE NOW?
YOU ARE HERE. This is what helps lost tourists find their way on big cities’ maps; you are here: a sound red mark in an uncertain geography of unknown roads. A declaration of intents to begin our future from, a minimal yet safe berth that you can moor when you’ve lost your compass. This is where you are. (more…)
TRUE OR FAKE?
Is staging the only kind of reality that can be truly explored by means of the photographic lenses, in a time when nothing has been left unseen? What makes the difference between the work of art and its copy, in the age of mechanical reproduction? What distinguishes reality from its representations? (more…)
BACK TO THE FUTURE?
Has the global economic crisis stopped the rush towards progress? Do we need to look backwards, in order to be able to look forwards? What solutions are suggested to us by the past, in order to face the future? RVM#9 – Back to the future? is a journey on lines that do not form a linear path; it is the declaration of a kind of restlessness that forces us to ask ourselves towards what and “when” is our destiny. (more…)
WHAT IS LOVE?
What is love? How does one define it? How does one inflect it? How does one express it? Is it salvation or damnation? Torment or ecstasy? Refuge or entrapment? What are the new rites, gestures, languages and crimes through which we celebrate it? RVM#8 – What is love? is our journey around the meanings and the senses of the word love. (more…)
HOW HARD CAN WE PUSH?
How strong can we drive? How far can we go? And how fast? How far is it permitted to dare and what boundaries we cannot overstep? How much can we rev up the engine, forcing the limits of our bodies, our desires, our ambitions? RVM#7 – How hard can we push? is our journey to the limit, our investigation of the break points, our vision from the runaway train. (more…)
ITALIANS DO IT BETTER?
Cast a glance. What do you see out of the window? We started from here, for this new journey. And we didn’t get far away. The idea, this time, was to look closely, changing the angle from which we lay our eyes on known things. Italians do it better? is the way we ask ourselves who Italians are, beyond a casual and diverse mix of people sharing the same territory. (more…)
ICONS OR IDOLS?
Which ones are the symbols of our time? What language do we choose to represent them? When the pursuit of an icon – a status, a religious symbol, a brand, a flag – turns into idolatry? Icons or Idols? is RVM#5 theme: this issue aims to be an exploration on new iconography (and new forms of idolatry) of the contemporary, a journey to discover the myths of the present and the visual codes by which we celebrate them. (more…)
TIME TO GROW UP?
Rearviewmirror is one year old. And it’s time to grow up. That’s why, starting with this issue, available in bookshops (and by subscription) as of now, we develop our research around a theme. With each issue, the thread following which we will try to keep our balance, will always be a question: ’cause we are not interested in definitions, but in doubts. (more…)
What’s new? With the obstinacy of those who struggle to keep pace with a world that produces images at breakneck speed, we pose this question to ourselves every time we put together this magazine. RVM # 3, available in bookshops (and by subscription) as of June 2010 , tries to provide answers by involving photographers and guest writers who once again contributed to its journey in pictures. (more…)
More pages, more pictures, more stories to tell. A magazine in lieu of a laboratory of narrative/visual contamination. Like a house with windows open on different sides, where each vistas offers its own perspective on the world. RVM # 2, available in bookshops (and by subscription) as of February 2010, starts again from photographic reportage, the main focus of the magazine, to venture once more into other forms of storytelling, such as writing – asking critics, directors and writers to draw their own personal “vision” starting with the stimuli provided by the images – up to multimedia and cinema. (more…)
